History & Origin: Golden Barrel Cactus, Echinocactus grusonii, is native to central Mexico, where it occurs in dry, rocky habitats. Its rounded form and golden spines have made it one of the most recognizable ornamental cacti in cultivation.

Care & Maintenance Guide:

  • Sun / Lighting: Provide several hours of direct sunlight each day. A south- or west-facing position is ideal, with gradual acclimation when moving plants into stronger sun.
  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings, then water thoroughly during active growth. Reduce watering substantially in winter. Persistent softness, yellowing, or dark areas may indicate excess moisture, while severe wrinkling can indicate dehydration.
  • Soil Type: Use a very well-draining mineral-rich cactus mix with coarse sand, pumice, perlite, or grit. The soil should be porous and neutral to slightly acidic or slightly alkaline.
  • Nutrients & Fertilization: Apply a diluted low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer once every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer. Avoid fertilizing during winter dormancy.
